The Village Recorder
Hello!
This week I have been recording more vocals in amazing studio here in LA.
The studio is called The Village.
It is nice to know how many really famous artists and bands have been recording their albums in this legendary place.
Impressive list including Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Phil Collins, Slipknot, Supertramp, Fleetwood Mac, Oasis, Tori Amos, RHCP, Aerosmith, Mariah Carey etc.
I have had a lot of fun to walk around the house and to feel the history of the studio hanging on its walls.
Every corner has a special memory…
Some of you might know that when I was a teenager I admired Whitney Houston. It’s very nice to find out that the Bodyguard soundtrack was recorded here in the same studio where I am singing 
But not everything is hanging on the walls. Guns N´Roses drummer came to say hello in a break during their recordings next door 
I read in the blog and forum that you are trying to guess what is the cover I recorded for the album.
If I should have more time, this might be a great opportunity to do a new contest… Maybe we can do something similar, but just for fun this time.
Interesting discovery was to learn that the album where the cover is taken from, was also recorded at The Village! As I told you before, the original song has lots of backing vocals.
I can say without a doubt that the song is a “classic”. I decided to cover it after listening to it hundreds of times in the Finnish radio. I never performed the song before MWS sessions. It is not a ballad…
Every day, including Saturdays and Sundays we continue mixing the album with Slamm at Remote Control.
“Lost Northern Star”, “Oasis” and “Ciarán’s Well” are now done.

I would be lying to you if I did not say I am extremeley excited to hear your new album! After Nightwish going on without you, I, like you, was shocked and excessivley confused as to why. I am nothing but relieved and pleased to hear that you are going solo!
Know that this fan of yours is going to faithfully follow your career for years ahead and I truly hope that I will become just one of your many future fans. If you go on tour, I hope you come to the States. Good luck with your cd Tarja, we all love you!

“Ciarán’s Well” sounds intriguing! Really interesting! o.O
I guess the song comes from the supposable healing powers of the water from the well. There is a festival as well, according to a site I found about this well.

Hey Tarja, thanks for keeping us up-to-date concerning the recording process. I must admit, you make me curious about the cover song.
If it had been played on the radio that often, it must be a song everybody knows. My guess would be a Queen song – maybe Bohemian Rhapsody because it is a classic and has loads of backing vocals.
Anyway, keep up your work – everybody is waiting for your Soloalbum.

Ok, I understood that when it’s full night here I must come to the blog ‘cuz almost surely I’ll find news!
I searched the website of the village studio recordings but there are tonnz of artists listed there, I mean those who recorded there… pretty difficult to pick come options to solve the riddle.
Some little help? Old song? Not so old? a liiiiitle hint about the style (of the original)? is it famous?
Please tarja, try to understand and have mercy on us!

I bet it’s wonderful to be working in such an amazing place. I love that window you’re stood in front of! If your songs reflect half of the beauty of the places you’ve been to, we’ll be in for one kickass album. But then, we know that anyway.

How many at me attempts? So, the first version: «I’m Your Baby Tonight» Whitney Houston. Backing vocals I did not consider, but it is a lot of them. It is exact not a ballad. This song twisted on radio of thousand times not only in Finland, but also worldwide in the early nineties. «I can say without a doubt that the song is a «classic».» I will go, to other songs I will listen, well?

I have a question as im a hard guns n roses fan… who was the drummer who came to say hello???? because, as far as we know, guns n roses had finished recording the new album “chinese democracy”… so, it was a surprise to hear they are recording. I dont know.

How you feel yourself? You work, and we have a good time between the affairs.
At first it was difficult to me to represent, that you sing a song with SUCH text («I’m Your Baby Tonight»), but then I have recalled photos of characters MWS and «the dream became a reality». Excuse me. Whitney H. In a video clip on this song has left on a motorcycle, but yours «storm» winter, therefore you could “dissect” on snowmobile! To me this song would not come to a head, but you SO looked at disks WH.
I not the expert on creativity of the majority artists and bands which you mention. I have all disks M.Carey, but almost all her hits – ballads (though and in style «soul»). Because of you, I cannot listen to them (also as well as «Rammstein»). «Queen» seldom recorded in LA, but I all the same will assume, that it can be «It ` s a hard life» – one of my favorites songs. Or «All God ` s people», it is recorded, most likely, in Montreux. «A winter ` s tale» it is recorded in the same place, but under the name could suit for MWS.
Improbably, my Russian fellow countrymen too “were noted” in yours «The village», but they for the present should study long at you (in absentia). There are still ideas …

I think this idea of a new contest is brilliant, although I couldn’t guess, considering I’m not from Finland hehe. I have an idea of a contest for you, here it goes: willing fans record something they really like, be it a film score, a classic one, anything. we record it (vocally or on another instrument) and sent it to you via e-mail or postal service. You choose the first 5 recordings which impressed you the most and give us a call, or whatever you feel like doing

Hi Tarja! hm…a classic song but not a ballade………hm……..that´s difficult.
Can you sing “I will always love you” of Whitney Houston? It´s a great song.
Is it a song of her you cover? I thing it is a great feeling to record in the same studio, where she recorded songs, isn´t it? It must be fantastic.

Mmmm… another contest is in order!!
I was gonna suggest a Queen cover, but as someone here said that they never recorded at The Village, then I guess Queen is out of the question… I’m gonna take a wild guess here, and suggest that it was a Pink Floyd song that you covered, but since I’m not so familiar with their music I’m not gonna say which song it could’ve been.
So, I see more songs have been finished… that’s supposed to mean that the album is near completion!! Can’t wait to have it in my hands!
Well Tarja, I hope you’re enjoying the rest of the process as much as we’re enjoying reading about it! I can see you’re getting a real kick out of it and that you probably learnt more in this single experience than in a lifetime!

Cris, yeah, I said that… (“I thought that maybe, the song will be “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen, but, Queen never recorded at the Village Studios……
so, can’t be “Bohemian Rhapsody”….”)…..
I was searching for a list of “number ones” songs recorded at The Village….but only found a list of singers and bands which recorded there….
And, Queen weren’t in that list….

did you ever listen to the cover of “streets of philadelphia” by liv kristine? she did that for her solo album “enter my religion” and it’s a great piece of work. would be something for you as well, I think. you could do a project wiht liv kristine anyway, that would be my dream – my favourite singers together in one project =)

I LOVE the new song, “I Walk Alone!” And I cannot wait to buy/listen/indulge in the new album! The new song is dark, melodic, and sufficiently abstract (or not) to affect thoughts of several things from your journey since October 2005. Maybe this is not what the song is about, but it makes me think of…
“I left a thorn under your bed, I’m never gone” (leaving a thorn in the Nightwish legacy?)
“I walk alone, Every step I take, I walk alone, My Winter storm
Holding me awake it’s never gone, When I walk alone”
The winter storm you endured begining in late 2005 and in the ensuing year or more after the terrible way you were treated. Since then you have walked alone in your solo career (with the assistance of many others, not the least has been Marcelo), taking on the world of music with great success.
And perhaps one of the most interesting set of lyrics:
“Go tell the world I’m still around, I didn’t fly I’m coming down, You are the wind the only sound, A whisper in my heart, When hope is torn apart”
You didn’t simply fly away never to be heard from again. You are a constant presence in the world. The former is a [passing] wind, only a whisper now after hope was torn apart (your hopes and those of your fans?).
The last line in that verse: “And no one can save you.” I will have to ponder. It is ominous, dark, and suggestive.
Ok, a few thoughts that may be far off the mark; only you know. In any case I am thrilled with this new song! It may be many things but most of all it is you!!!! Another masterpiece from the master herself!

I’m now listening to the song. FINALLY I get a taste of the album… and I’m loving it! The next step, the videoclip to match the song… I can pretty much see some lose images in my imagination based on the pictures you shared with us (again, thank you for doing that!) and I think the characters you created for the video will fit the spirit of the song perfectly…
I can say without a doubt that you’re finally where you were supposed to be all along. I think you found yourself at last. And I’m happy for you. You deserve all the good things you received and continue receiving during the creation process of MWS… and you better start getting ready to receive all the marvellous things and the satisfactions that will come after the release of the album!

Wow I am so impressed with the song “I walk alone” it’s so powerful and energetic, not to mention quite heavy. I didn’t expect such a dramatic score but now I know that we will be in for a treat. The days towards your album “MWS” will be released is like counting the days for X-mas. Though I know it will be worth it, mind miy confidence has always been with you Tarja. I have never doubted in you nor your ability to produce / make great music.
I feel that I have been blessed to be here and read all that lovely news and pictures you post for us fans .

I guess the main reason is that we all expected a poppier sound for a debut single but you surprised us all again with this powerful heavy guitar sound and your voice which I won’t waste any time nor word talking about ‘cuz there’s nothing more to say but that you’re in the Olympus of singers (both metal and not, and I’m not gonna quote anyone) since quite a bit of time.

Nose, si querias que ya se escuchara, pero viste como es internet, es horrible y se filtra todo, pero yo me entere por el foro, ahí pusieron tu canción. No te pongas mal si no te gusto la idea, que el escuchar la canción va a ser que muchos fans compren tu disco, incluida yo.

How your mood? Thanks to you, at me excellent! I listen «IWA», excuse me, I have not waited on October, 12th or 15. You, of course, understand, that «IWA» should become a super hit. I yet did not hear your SUCH purest strong and magnificent voice! Thanks you big for your talent! Each time, when I heard your next new project, me it was not believed, that you can sing even better!
Tarja, during listening IWA I had an association, that mood «IWA» and «Death on two legs» Queen, a little similar. Their creation was dedicated to long-awaited leaving of the bad producer. But music and your performance there is nothing are not similar, even on you former. It seemed to me, or I really heard during an instrumental part, a theme of «Dies irae» W.A.Mozart? If indeed I did not meet so graceful integration of classics with pop.
Tarja when you “will ask” me what 12th song (cover) I would like to hear on «MWS» or a following album, I will respond: please, Tarja, sing something from or with «Symphony X».
Tarja, I wish you not to worry for your released album, all will be very good. To me it will be especially cheerful in holiday with «IWA» and other your music the next 2 weeks. Thanks you.

(besides youtube is today’s radio… just that we can hear 24 hours of Tarja hehee, with no commertial cuts! at least until we can buy 2 or 3 albums -you know they get ruided after intensive replaying-) This only makes us wish more and more your new album!! and makes us very very happy TuT

Damm! I cant stop listing to “I walk alone” t. Im hope im not tierd on it when you realese it.. But then there are 9 more tracks.. Wooot !! I cant wait.
The perfect (soft) cover on MWS would be madonna’s Frozen (I love that one, even if im not a Madonna fan, it has so naked and .. cold sound). To bad it cant be it came late 90′ish or so I think
